Three races in particular are getting national attention…because analysts say they’re in play and could switch parties.

The first is District 4. It runs from the northeast Sacramento suburbs to the Nevada and Oregon borders. Republican John Doolittle has represented the district for nine-terms…but he’s retiring. The two men battling to replace him are retired Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Democrat Charlie Brown and Republican State Senator Tom McClintock.

The other closely watched race is in District 11. It sprawls across San Joaquin and three other counties. Freshman Democrat Jerry McNerney faces Republican Dean Andal, a former State Assemblyman.

In District 3, which covers most of Sacramento County…but not the city…and four other counties, Republican incumbent Dan Lungren is fending off a challenge from Democratic Bill Durston.

And in District 5, which covers the city of Sacramento, Democrat Doris Matsui is expected to beat challenger Republican Paul Smith and coast to reelection.
