The Field Poll estimates that 13-point six million votes will be cast in the general election. If the pollsters are right, that would be more than a million votes higher than the previous record in 2004. Percentage-wise, the Field Poll’s prediction would mean 78.9 percent of registered voters cast ballots. That’s the highest in 22 years. The survey says the surge is due to population gains, more naturalized citizens, aggressive voter registration drives and high voter interest. The survey also predicts a record number of Californians will vote early or vote by mail – 46.5 percent. Secretary of State Debra Bowen does not predict turnout.
