Last month, the council voted to endorse Proposition 8 – the controversial statewide ban on same-sex marriage. That sent the campus into an uproar, pitting politicized Christian fundamentalists against a more liberal campus faction. But after two days of voting, students rejected the recall by a margin of around 200 votes.

Student David Fisher helped organize the recall.

"We just missed the mark by a hair. This just goes to show you how divided ARC is. The one good thing in this whole thing is that for the first time ARC is opening its eyes. We finally have students who are participating and who care about the process."

The flap over Prop 8 is the latest instance in which religious tensions have flared on the campus. Last year, a group called the Christian Civilization Club observed Islamo-Fascism Awareness Week. Angry Muslim students and others ripped down signs that maligned Muslim prophet Muhammad.
