After a primary election marked by allegations of sexual misconduct and dirty campaign mailers, things have calmed down a bit since the first round of votes were counted in June. Fargo campaign manager Dale Howard says voters are starting to pay attention again after tuning out a bit the last couple of months.
Howard: “People are seeing the progress that the mayor’s made in Sacramento with recent things like what’s happening with Downtown Plaza and the progress that’s being made on K Street and really things going on all over the city with new libraries and community centers that are being started.”
As for Johnson, campaign manager Steve Maviglio says his candidate is running a strong race.
Maviglio: “We’re right where we wanna be. We have created a lot of energy in the city. Kevin has run a very positive campaign, we’ve run town hall meetings throughout the city, drawing big crowds, and we’re on track to bring the change to Sacramento that the city needs.”
The debate comes at a crucial time for both candidates, as counties start sending out vote-by-mail ballots Monday. Meanwhile, the latest fundraising reports are out Monday as well. According to figures from the two campaigns, Johnson outraised Fargo again, as he’s done throughout the race. But for the first time, the mayor held her own. She brought in around $175,000 and has about $110,000 on hand; Johnson raised a bit under $240,000 and has $140,000 in the bank.
