Democratic Assemblyman Alberto Torrico says the Governor’s record veto rate affects the legislature’s relationship with Schwarzenegger:
“It’s going to be extremely difficult for many of us to continue to work with this Governor.”
Schwarzenegger vetoed 35 percent of the bills that reached his desk. Many included a stock message. It said given the historic budget delay, the Governor was only signing bills of “highest priority.”
“That just seems to me to be ridiculous and a total abdication of his position as Governor.”
Torrico wants lawmakers to vote to override some of the vetoes. The office of the Secretary of the Senate says lawmakers could do that – if they reconvened prior to the new legislative session, which begins December first. But aides say it’s unlikely to happen. The Governor has said he fully considered every bill – and his spokesman says Schwarzenegger isn’t worried about his working relationship with lawmakers.
