Salaries at both California State University Sacramento and the University of California Davis tend to fall below average. At Sac State, the average salary for new tenure-track faculty was $57,639 as of fall of 2006. Even within the CSU system, that’s more than 10 percent below average. And it would take a 19 percent increase to match similar universities across the country, according to a study by the California Postsecondary Education Commission. UC Davis measures its salaries at about 10 percent behind a comparison group of schools. A year ago, the UC Regents launched a four-year plan to close the gap. But state budget woes have stalled those plans. But the state’s budget crunch has also eased some of the salary pressure. The schools simply aren’t hiring as many professors as years’ past.
