Mike Jimenez easily won re-election at the California Correctional Peace Officers Association meeting in Las Vegas Thursday. Jimenez has led the union’s effort to recall Governor Schwarzenegger.
Bill Whalen is a research fellow with the Hoover Institution at Stanford. He says the union is now at a crossroads.
"And the crossroads is – is it really serious about going forward with this recall and second if it is serious what is the union going to do work on its public image. Because I’m afraid that if it goes ahead with the recall, it’s facing a beating because in a one on one public relations battle with Arnold Schwarzenegger, few people prevail."
The prison guards union is one of the richest and most influential lobbying forces in state government. It’s been feuding with Governor Schwarzenegger since he took office five years ago.
Last week, the union filed the paperwork to begin a recall campaign against Schwarzenegger.
