The high-tech giant, best known for making computers and printers, has about 4,500 employees in the Sacramento region after its purchase last month of Electronic Data Systems Corp. Company officials would not comment late Monday, adding no sites have been chosen for layoffs. H-P has about 3,000 employees at its Roseville campus — making it the largest private employer in Placer County — and another 1,500 in Rancho Cordova who are former EDS workers. The company, which boasts $38 billion in revenue and 210,000 employees worldwide, will offer severance packages and job-placement services for laid off workers. Hewlett-Packard will begin cutting its work force during the next several weeks, and the effort could take three years.
