Senator Dick Ackerman is one of a handful of G.O.P lawmakers at the convention.  He’s a delegate and says he wants to participate as much as he can.  He doesn’t see leaving the Capitol as a problem—given that there’s no imminent budget vote.

“I was there Sunday and I was there Monday to see if we were actually going to do anything and then it was very clear that they were not going to take any action until we presented our proposal so I’m keeping advised on what’s going on and as soon as it’s ready for a vote I’ll be there…”

Ackerman’s talking about the Senate Republicans’ budget plan. That’s expected to be voted on possibly later this week. But Assemblyman John Benoit cancelled his tickets.

“I’m not gonna go when the most important job I was sent here to do—the budget of the state of California is still pending.  It just doesn’t feel good to me to be out of state.”

Other G.O.P lawmakers attending include Assembly members Bonnie Garcia and Van Tran and Senator Abel Maldonado-- who scheduled a quick trip to keep a speaking engagement at the convention.
