A new online social networking community for children launches early next month. At Yoursphere members can post profiles and join “spheres” of interests, ranging from academics to art, sports and music. Users can also post videos, blogs and photos. It’s marketed toward 9 to 18 year olds. But unlike other social networks, Yoursphere screens who can belong. The site verifies the age of each member, requires parental consent, confirms the identity of each parent or guardian and confirms that they are not registered sex offenders. The site has been in development for 22 months and is privately funded by angel investors. It has eight full-time employees and marketing teams in San Diego and the United Kingdom. And also unlike other social networks, Yoursphere won’t be free. It will cost members about $5 a month or about $40 a year.
