Checking some of the individual local districts…both Sacramento City and San Juan had dropout rates near 26%, Folsom-Cordova’s was 16.6 and Elk Grove’s was 14.6%.

Dave Gordon is the Sacramento County Superintendent of Schools.

"The districts of course vary widely in their approach to high school education but in general I think our school districts are pushing hard in the high schools to do things like career technical education and I think we have to keep up the pressure to do more of that."

Gordon says the real issue is finding out why students are not engaged in high school. He says he’s working closely with incoming Democratic Senate Leader Darryl Steinberg on a major initiative to reduce the dropout rate.
