The Board of Supervisors approved sharp increases in parking fines Tuesday – with most of the basic violations going from $35 to $50.

Sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Tim Curran says the increases are both reasonable and a needed source of revenue.

Curran: “There are certain limits that the statutes allow you, as far as what you can charge.  And we feel that our increases – they don’t meet the maximums as what’s allowed by statute, but they do bring us in line with other surrounding jurisdictions.”

Other increases include raising the fine for parking in a handicapped space to $400 and hiking the price of getting caught without current registration tabs on a license plate to $108.

The city of Sacramento increased its parking fines earlier this year.
