The workers are part of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees labor union and do jobs around the hospital like housekeeping and food services.

Judie Boehmer is with the UC Davis Med Center. She says administrative staff and temp workers are stepping in to fill the jobs and take care of patients.

Boehmer: “The floors are going to get cleaned, the beds are going to get cleaned, the linen will be washed, the food will be delivered to the patient.”

Boehmer says the striking employees ignored a court injunction and will be disciplined. She says additional security is on campus to protect patients and workers. The state is monitoring the hospital’s patient care standards during the strike and says so far it’s in compliance.
