Tom Miller is the County Executive Officer. He says the number of building permits for new houses has fallen more than 50% over the past four years.
"Development activity’s still not reaching where it balances work load or revenue to expenditures. It’s unfortunate. Our hearts go out to the employees but it is a balancing act in terms of trying to provide services and balancing the workload at the same time."
Right now, the Building Department has about 40 employees.
Miller says during the last two years of economic uncertainty, Placer County has limited expenses. And he says more than 200 positions are being kept vacant.
