The study looked at the Sacramento, San Francisco, San Diego and Los Angeles areas. It ranked them on how much money they spent on chronic care for Medicare patients and what the results were. The research was done by CALPIRG, a consumer advocacy group.
Michael Russo with the organization says Sacramento hospitals are the best in the state at getting patients proper care.
“The quality of care is as high or higher in Sacramento on a lot of these measures but they’re spending 67 percent less than what LA spends on the same kinds of patients.”
Russo says Sacramento hospitals are better at managing patients’ chronic conditions and that helps them avoid unnecessary intensive care treatments. Los Angeles spent the most money while patients had the worst health outcomes. San Diego and San Francisco were in the middle.
