That includes checking on vulnerable residents and opening daytime cooling centers. One of those is at the Hart Senior Center on 27th Street.
Meanwhile, Sacramento’s Loaves and Fishes charity handed out bottles of ice water to homeless people in Downtown Sacramento Tuesday. Executive Director Sister Libby Fernandez says they’ll do it again Wednesday.
"Any time it’s hot like this we want to give more water to our guests. Many of our guests are outside and do not go to the shelters at night so I’d say there’s about 1,000 in any given night."
City officials also say their Code Enforcement Department is checking with downtown single-room-occupancy hotels to make sure cooling rooms are available and functional. Two years ago, 13 people died in Sacramento during an 11-day heat wave…several of them lived in the SRO’s.
