State Park Reservations Up
July Fourth is always the busiest weekend at the nearly 300 California State Parks. But this summer the campgrounds are more popular than ever. In fact, reservations are up ten percent for the year.

Here’s an indication of just how popular state park campgrounds are this summer:
“This year in the first day of reservations for the month of august we had over 17-thousand people call to make reservations in a single day. That’s a record.”
Roy Stearns with State Parks says the number of campsites, however, has not gone up. There are 15-thousand. Two-thirds can be reserved. The others are first come, first served. And Stearns says if you didn’t plan ahead for the fourth, you’d better get there by Wednesday if you want a site. In January, Governor Schwarzenegger proposed closing nearly 50 parks to help address a state budget shortfall. But in May he rescinded that and instead suggested raising some fees at parks.
