The Board of Supervisors voted to shift a contract for medical care for prisoners and the medically indigent from UC Davis to a third-party administrator. The administrator, called Benefit & Risk Management Services, will arrange for care through Anthem Blue Cross.
Under the proposed agreement, UC Davis would probably still provide hospital care to the same county patients. But now, it would be at Blue Cross rates, generally considered low in the industry. The county had worked with UC Davis for 35 years. This fiscal year, the cost for UC Davis care is nearly $50 million. With the change, the cost would be $37 million.
