"Our budget is looking rather grim for next year."

Assistant County Administrator Pat Leary says like other local governments across the state, they’re dealing with sharp increases in expenses and a drop in local revenues…

"…mostly from the property tax. So our budget for 2008-2009 is actually lower than our budget for 2007-2008."

$1,560,115 lower. Leary says they’ll have to layoff 27 employees…most of them from the county’s Alcohol, Drug and Mental Health Department. And she says they’ll cut expenses for travel, overtime and supplies so that residents don’t see a big change in county services.

Budget hearings are scheduled for June 17th.
