Governor Schwarzenegger signed an executive order aimed at speeding up water transfers to areas that need it… He is also urging people to conserve.  And he included a pitch for his plans to build water storage like dams.

“Because while we cannot control Mother Nature but what we can control is to prepare ourselves for future dry years…”

Schwarzenegger stopped short of imposing mandatory water rationing. State Department of Water Resources Director Lester Snow says that’s what they want to avoid.

“So the idea is to put programs in place now to soften the impact in 2008 and prepare for a potential third year of drought in 2009.”

Schwarzenegger says court imposed restrictions on water from the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta and a dismal forecast for the snowmelt runoff are also cause for concern. Several local water agencies have already imposed their own water restrictions.
