Vanderhoef was appointed as the University of California’s fifth chancellor back in 1994. He’s credited with helping to remove barriers to higher education by expanding partnerships with community colleges. Vanderhoef says he plans to take a year long sabbatical and then return to the faculty as a professor of plant biology. A committee will begin a nationwide search for his replacement.
