A new class action was filed against Sutter Health on May 6. The lawsuit alleges the health care giant violated state rules on meal and rest breaks for nurses, surgical technicians and other staff. This lawsuit brings the number of class actions filed against Sutter on the breaks issue to three. It also suggests the cases could be combined into one big lawsuit that would address the claims of employees across the health system. But it also raises the stakes for Sacramento-based Sutter Health, whose local hospitals are the subject of an ongoing state investigation on the issue. It could cost the system millions of dollars in unpaid wages. Sutter isn’t alone. A class action was filed in San Francisco on Feb. 4 against Catholic Healthcare West over breaks. It’s also been a problem in other industries, such as the restaurant industry.
