A spokeswoman for the Robert Mondavi Winery says the pioneering vintner died peacefully at his home in Yountville on Friday.
Karen Ross is the president of the California Association of Wine Grape Growers. She says Mondavi helped put California wine on the global map.
"Mr. Mondavi didn't just go out to sell Mondavi Wines. He sold California and the image of California and really was a huge contributor to making wine an icon for the state of California."
Mondavi started his own winery in 1966 and used innovations such as cold fermentation and stainless steel tanks to build the company into a thriving business.
Mondavi was 94 years old.
