The initiative has drawn support from groups like California Common Cause, and the League of Women Voters. Former Governor Gray Davis was also on hand. They were turning in more than one-million signatures to qualify their measure for the November ballot. It would take the job of re-drawing political district lines away from state lawmakers. Instead, a fourteen-member independent citizen’s commission would do that.
The group would be made up of equal numbers of Democrats and Republicans and include independent voters. Schwarzenegger says competitive districts will hold lawmakers accountable. The signatures must still be verified by local elections officials.
