The new owner of Sunrise Mall wants to demolish buildings behind the shopping center and pave the way for a movie theater and more restaurants and shops. Steadfast Commercial Properties bought the 1.1-million-square-foot mall in January for what some estimated was a $100 million deal. Now the company has asked the city of Citrus Heights for permission to tear down 67,400 square feet of buildings. The company wants to construct more than three times that amount in front of and along the north side of the mall. And a 3,000-seat movie theater complex is a key part of Steadfast’s plans. A new theater could draw traffic to the mall and attract new retailers. But before Steadfast can begin, its plans need approval from the Citrus Heights Planning Commission and City Council, as well as some environmental analysis.
