The decision by the Pacific Fishery Management Council has put a stop to commercial and sport fishing for salmon off California and most of Oregon.  The decision came because of a sharp decline in the number of salmon who returned to the Sacramento River last fall.

Governor Schwarzenegger’s emergency declaration directs the state to activate loan programs to help those affected.  He says he has also appealed to the President for assistance.

“We have also requested from the Bush Administration to declare federal fishery disaster so we can draw federal money…”

The State Department of Fish and Game will also issue refunds for commercial salmon fishing permits. The Council’s ban must still be approved by the National Marine Fisheries Service.
