Workers at the nut processing plant are non-union. Blue Diamond says it’ll let workers vote on unionization…but it has to be a secret ballot election at the company site.

Protest organizer Ricky Gutierrez says they want the vote to be off-site.

"What we are asking for is free and fair elections…so a neutral place where workers are not intimidated, where they feel free and comfortable to make their own choice."

Blue Diamond officials returned our request for comment with the following statement:

”Blue Diamond Growers supports a secret ballot election conducted by the National Labor Relations Board."

Union groups are expected to ask the Sacramento City Council to step in early next month.
