An old name and Sacramento staple is getting new life from deep-pocketed new owners. The Sacramento River Cats are wrapping up an agreement to purchase the local Merlino’s Freeze, a move that would pump additional money and staff into a brand that goes back more than six decades. The River Cats are acquiring rights to the Merlino’s name, recipes and overall production and retail business. Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed, but it’s expected to be completed by the home opener on April 11. The icy dessert has a complex past. Started in 1946, its original owners lost the company in bankruptcy court in 2000. After a series of owners, the company will now be a separate division of the River Cats and include a staff of 10 to 15 employees.
