Affymetrix Inc. has started cutting jobs in West Sacramento and plans to move most of its genetic test manufacturing to Singapore by the end of the year. The company laid off 23 people and plans two more rounds of job cuts, according to a source speaking on the condition of anonymity. The company has about 170 employees in West Sacramento, down from 201 last fall. Affymetrix makes GeneChips, which are small, disposable test panels imprinted with millions of gene fragments. The panels are used by researchers to study genetic variation and test potential drugs. Employees who are laid off will receive severance packages and priority when applying for other jobs within the company.
