Senate Leader Don Perata says the goal is to take an early, hard look at next year’s budget—and the Governor’s proposals for across-the-board spending cuts.
“What will the state of California look like if we chose to say this is a spending problem not a revenue problem, that’s a nice soundstage way to look at life. It ain’t the real world.”
Perata says tax increases aren’t up for discussion just yet but tax breaks should be examined. Senate Republican Leader Dick Ackerman says eliminating some breaks would drive wealthy Californians from the state.
“It makes no sense to even consider putting additional taxes on them. They’re very mobile. You can’t tax your way out of this thing. You have to control the spending.”
Democratic Leader Don Perata says the budget will overshadow much of the legislature’s usual work including creating new laws.
