Haagen-Dazs is donating $100,000 to UC Davis’ Honey Bee Research Lab. Sue Cobey is a bee breader with the facility. She says the donation will help kick-start their research.
"It’s been a bit depressing for the bee keeping industry and to have an outside company like this come in to get the program up and going has been just tremendous and gives the industry a lot of uplift in this very difficult time so we’re pretty excited about it."
Cobey cites nutrition, pesticides and climate change as reasons for the bee shortage. She says their goal is to find ways to make bees healthy again.
Honey bees pollinate 90 different crops in the US including almonds, alfalfa and tree fruit.
