Renwood Winery’s problem was shipping. Founder Robert Smerling was having trouble shipping wine from his headquarters in Amador County because trucks couldn’t travel on Route 16 to Sacramento. FedEx and UPS shipments had to be scheduled far in advance. He needed to be closer to Sacramento’s highways. So he moved his headquarters to Rancho Cordova off Old Placerville Road. Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed, but the new office has doubled the winery’s regional presence. Renwood is also hiring a handful of workers. The timing is right. Renwood’s direct shipping and wine sales have exploded, up 68 percent in the past year. Things haven’t gone so well for plans for a tasting room. The California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control nixed Renwood’s current plans for a tasting room at 10th and L streets.
