The $1.3 billion project will create a gated spillway next to the dam. That will let officials release more water when the reservoir is lower.
Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne says the project fulfills one of government’s fundamental responsibilities.
Kempthorne: “Short of building an arc, this is the best protection we can offer the citizens of Sacramento. And we simply hope we don’t have 40 days and 40 nights of rain.”
And State Senator Darrell Steinberg of Sacramento says it’s an example of federal, state and local officials working together.
Steinberg: “Hurricane Katrina did tell all of us – we already knew it, but it told all of us – that we have been warned. And the people of greater Sacramento can be assured that their government is heeding this warning.”
Officials say the different branches of government will save almost a billion dollars by working together – and finish the project seven years ahead of schedule.
