18 million seems to be the lucky number for developer Ed Mackay. First, his Holiday Inn Express and Suites project, planned for east Placerville, has finally started after five years of battles with unhappy neighbors. Requiring a new road and complicated ground work, the cost is expected to run $18 million. Then MacKay has submitted plans for a Hilton Garden Inn in the same area. This hotel is also penciled in at $18 million to build. The two projects will bring 218 rooms to Placerville by the end of 2009. That’s an increase of 70 percent. But sources say there aren’t currently enough hotels in town to hold lodgers seeking out the area’s wineries and outdoor activities such as fishing, hiking, white-water rafting and mountain biking.
