The St. John’s Shelter for Women and Children is at full capacity, housing 118 people. Director Michelle Steebe says the demand for shelter has risen as the home foreclosure rate has skyrocketed.
"In year’s past we might have seen about 50% of our clients be first time homeless and we’re up around 80% now. So these are people that are not what you might call chronically homeless, these are people who just can’t seem to make it in Sacramento any longer on their limited income and raise children."
The Saint John’s Shelter offers women financial management classes, drug and alcohol treatment programs and domestic violence counseling. Steebe says when they can’t provide shelter to a woman they refer her to the County Shelter at Cal Expo. They also encourage women to stay with friends and family.
