If you’re still redeeming holiday gift cards, stores will have to give you cash back if the balance is under ten dollars, under a new state law. You can also now buy kangaroo-skin leather products in California.
And some workers are getting a raise in the New Year. The minimum wage bumps up from seven-fifty to eight dollars an hour.
There are a couple of new laws that’ll affect what Californians can do in the car. For one, it’ll be illegal to smoke if there’s anyone under 18 in the vehicle. Violators could face fines up to 100 bucks. And new cell phone restrictions go into effect this year – but not until July 1. After that, it’ll be illegal for drivers 18 and older to use a cell phone while driving, unless they use a hands-free device. For drivers under 18, they can’t use any cell phones at all – hands-free or otherwise.
