Vince Matranga is chief of the Sacramento City School District’s police department. He says   vandalism cost the district thousands of dollars in repairs during the 2006 winter break.

"Last year, I was just looking at statistics on how much money we spent during that two week break, it was $7,000."

That was up drastically from nearly $1,200 the previous winter. Matranga says people who live near schools can really make a difference.

"If our neighbors step forward and call the police when they see kids up on the roof spray painting the walls with graffiti or throwing rocks at the windows we’ll reduce vandalism considerably.

Matranga says to report suspicious behavior call the police or Sheriff’s Department.
