Officials won’t give out the teen’s name because he’s a juvenile.
Sheriff’s spokesman Tim Curran says it’s rare that someone so young commits this kind of crime.
Curran: “It’s very atypical. It’s something we have not seen at least in recent history. So we’re very shocked at this and appalled by this individual’s behavior.”
Sheriff John McGinness says he thinks the boy will be prosecuted as an adult.
Officials say Deputy Vu Nguyen was chasing the suspect through backyards and over fences in South Sacramento Wednesday afternoon. He was shot during the chase.
The 37-year-old Nguyen was one of two deputies in the department’s gang team who focused on Asian gangs.
