Democratic Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez says trying to reach consensus on health care is difficult.
“The status is one day we’re up, another day we’re down.”
He acknowledges his own legislation on the subject does not have much support.
“I still have all the interest groups and respective healthcare organizations at the table. Everybody talking about how to get a pound of flesh out of somebody else except themselves and advantage themselves in the market…”
Nunez says he’s been advised by his consultants to give up on the prospect but he says he’ll keep negotiating. Lawmakers are on 24-hour notice to return to the Capitol should a deal arise. A spokesman for the Assembly Republicans says health care will be on the agenda at their upcoming policy retreat.
