Supporters of the California Property Owners and Farmland Protection Act have submitted more than a million signatures to qualify their initiative for the June ballot.  They say the measure will prevent government from seizing someone’s property and turning it over to another private interest for development.  Kenny Watkins represents the California Farm Bureau Federation.  He says farms need the protection.

“As the city limits continue to expand California law allows government to come after property, take the water rights and give the property to someone else…”

But Brian Augusta with the Sacramento Housing Alliance says it will eliminate rent controls that provide affordable housing.

“We need to keep every tool in place and ensure seniors and people with disabilities can find housing they can afford.”

Opponents are preparing to submit signatures for their own initiative on eminent domain—also for the June, 2008 ballot.
