Business executives and community leaders are already bracing for major traffic problems from the project between L and S streets that would at times close multiple northbound and southbound lanes from March through November. As part of the project, Caltrans will remove old pavement and lay down a new drainage system with electronic monitors to determine how pumps are working to remove water from underneath the seven-block stretch. About 190,000 commuters use I-5 every weekday, and many may look for ways to avoid the construction zone. So, the around-the-clock construction project will likely affect traffic flow on Highway 50, Interstate 80, Capital City Freeway and Highway 99.
