The complaint against the Speaker was filed with the Fair Political Practices Commission by The California Term Limits Defense Fund. The group opposes an initiative on the February ballot to change term limits law – a change that would let the Democratic Speaker keep his job longer.
The organization alleges Nunez misspent campaign money on overseas travel, fancy dinners and expensive gifts. The group’s consultant Kevin Spillane said in a statement that Californians deserve to have full information about the Nunez case before the election.
The Speaker claims all of his spending was legal. In a statement, Nunez spokesman Steve Maviglio called the Term Limits Defense Fund right-wingers who were “desperate to tar the Speaker.”
