Senate President Pro-Tem Don Perata told lawmakers Tuesday what he’ll do immediately to keep his plan alive:
“What I intend to do tomorrow is to take the bill to the attorney general for title and summary for purposes of initiating it as an initiative…”
Republicans rejected Perata’s bill because it did not include specific plans to build dams. It would instead leave that decision up to local governments. G.O.P lawmakers favor the Governor’s nine-billion dollar measure that includes money for dam construction. Republican Senator Dave Cogdill says the G.O.P is also considering the ballot for Schwarzenegger’s proposal.
“We’ll see how negotiations go but we’re certainly ready to do that if we need to.”
As for the Governor he says he’s still working with lawmakers. The Secretary of State says a bill must be ready by mid-month to make the February ballot.
