Assembly Republican Leader Mike Villines says water conservation and underground storage should be looked at as part of an overall water plan.  But building dams—or new surface storage—is an absolute must:

“If we don’t have surface storage, we don’t have a deal…”

Democratic Assemblywoman Lois Wolk will chair the first special session hearing on water in the Assembly.  She says it’s too soon to say what must be included.

“I find it annoying that these ultimatums are being thrown out. That’s not helpful nor productive.”

Republicans want three dams. Governor Schwarzenegger has introduced a nine-billion dollar bond plan that would fund construction. Many Democrats reject dams—citing environmental issues and cost concerns. The governor and legislative leaders want to put a water bond before voters in February.
