The city has hired consultants to interview entrepreneurs and community leaders to see if there’s enough demand to make it worth the price. The consultants will also look at possible sites.
The city could get a little help. The federal Economic Development Administration has agreed to match 50 percent of the construction costs for an incubator.
The price can vary depending on the type. Wet lab facilities, for example, cost at least $3 million to build. That doesn’t include operating or maintenance costs.
The area already has a few incubators, one in El Dorado Hills, at McClellan, and a private incubator in West Sacramento that has operated since the early 1990s.
