Work crews shut it down at 5 AM Monday, September 17th, to begin a Pedestrian and Bikeway Improvement Project. Linda Tucker is with the city’s Transportation Department. She says they sympathize with anyone who will be inconvenienced by the closure.
"We’ve tried to minimize that window that it will be closed to the shortest period possible. We arranged it around the River Cat season and also to be done before the Christmas shopping season. "
The bridge is scheduled to re-open a few days before Thanksgiving. Meantime, work crews will be widening the sidewalks on the lift span portion of the bridge.
Alternate routes are the I Street Bridge or the Pioneer Bridge on Highway 50.
