Last year, 24 kids died in Sacramento County because of child abuse and neglect. That’s up from 17 deaths in 2005 and 11 deaths in 2004. The numbers come from the county’s Child Death Review Team. Of those 24 cases last year, more than half had current or prior Child Protective Services history.
The Death Review Team is recommending that the county add 25 more positions to Child Protective Services. The panel says that will help reduce workload and allow social workers to spend more time with each family. Another recommendation from the Review Team is a policy change for social workers: make decisions on what’s best for the child rather than maintaining the family unit.
