The 16-day event ended Monday night and fair officials say attendance was up, especially at night. Jessica Dunning with the fair says about 6,000 more people attended this year, despite triple-digit heat during the final week.
"Each year we try and learn from the previous year - what did fairgoers like, what made them come back? And then of course our free concert series is always a really big draw. We had five days in a row of 100 degree weather and although that brought fewer people during the day, people really like those summer nights."
Dunning says there were no security problems this year. But during the fair’s closing Monday night Sacramento police dispatched riot gear after a series of fights broke out. More than 50 officers lined the main entrance. Authorities say there were no serious injuries.
