Ed Scofield with RT says the cuts are necessary to balance the agency’s budget. He attributes the shortfall to reduced ridership, lower-than-expected local sales tax revenues and less money from the state.

"We were supposed to receive some, what we call “spillover funds,” and the governor, instead of putting them into transit, he transferred those funds to the General Fund and thus the impact to Regional Transit was $14 million that we lost."

The downtown trolley, Stockton Boulevard express and routes from Meadowview to downtown are expected to be among those with reduced service under the plan. The proposed cuts would take effect in January.
