Imagine that someone offered you a lifetime of beauty – absolutely free.

Along with this bargain, you’d also get a cooler place to live and cheaper energy bills too. You’d jump on that deal, right?

Well, that bargain is being offered right here in Sacramento. SMUD and the Sacramento Tree Foundation are teaming up to help beautify neighborhoods and reduce power consumption. They’ve launched the NeighborWoods program, and it’s one of the best deals in town.

At no cost to homeowners, foresters will come to your neighborhood, examine the tree canopy and create a plan for shading the area. They’ll provide the trees, the stakes and the expertise. All you’ll need to do is help organize your neighborhood and keep the trees watered the first three years.

Sacramento has one of the great urban forests, but there’s also a lot of open pavement and rooftops. The NeighborWoods program can help cover these hot spots. In a warming world, that’s a very cool idea.
